About this car and driver:
Driven by Jo Siffert of Switzerland, the
STP Marlboro Porsche 917/10/002,
powered by
a normally-aspirated 5 litre engine making 630 horsepower, scored a fine fourth place in the overall 1971 Can Am point standings behind the McLarens of Peter Revson, Denny Hulme and the Lola of Jackie Stewart, all using much stronger Chevrolet V8s. In autumn of '71 Porsche, which had already decided on a works entry for 1972 partnering with Roger Penske, started an intensive testing program at their Weissach facility with the 917/10, driven by Mark Donohue. For the first time ever, a mighty 12 cylinder twin-turbo engine was installed in a racing car. Porsche won the '72 Can Am championship with George Follmer driving the
Penske L&M 917/10
.
And i
n 1973, Donohue repeated that triumph in the successor Penske 917/30 sponsored by
Sunoco.
After Siffert`s fatal Formula One crash at Brands Hatch,
his family sold 917/10/002 to German Porsche test driver, Willi Kauhsen, who successfully entered the updated car in the
European
Interserie
with the backing of Bosch where he scored strong podium finishes.
